Full Description

  • Your 4-hour tour will begin at 10 am, where you will be picked up from your hotel in Allahabad. You will relax in your private chauffeur-driven and air-conditioned car as you head Chandra Shekhar Azad park, Prayagraj is one of the oldest cities in India. It is crowned in ancient scriptures as ‘Prayag’ or ‘Teertharaj’ and is considered the holiest of pilgrimage centers of India. In scriptures Prayagraj is ‘King of Teerath (all pilgrimages)’. The site’s religious importance to Hinduism persists. Each year a festival takes place at the rivers’ confluence, and every 12th year a much larger festival, Kumbh Mela, is attended by millions of devotees. Prayag’s importance in the ancient Buddhist period of Indian history is attested by the inscriptions on a pillar attributed to the 3rd-century-BCE Mauryan emperor Ashoka. The pillar—which is believed to have been erected in a nearby locality and moved to Prayagraj in Mughal times—still stands inside the gateway to the old Prayagraj fort, which is situated strategically at the confluence of the two rivers. From 1904 to 1949 the city was the capital of the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh). It was a center of the Indian independence movement against British rule and was the home of the Nehru family, whose estate, Anand Bhawan, is now a museum. The city lies close to Triveni Sangam, "three-river confluence", original name – Prayag, "place of sacrifice or offering" – which lies at the Sangam (confluence) of the Ganga, Yamuna and Sarasvati rivers. Prayagraj was originally called Kaushambi (now a separate district) by the Kuru rulers of Hastinapur, who developed it as their capital.
