In this workshop, we create maps using open source software by using satellite derived remotely sensed data that will culminate in creating several thematic atlases of India's changing environment. The spatial analysis that the atlas produces is a historical view of the environment in India on a scale that has not been possible or attempted before the advent of remote sensing data analysis. The themes we map include urban expansion, deforestation, displacement due to development projects, water resource management and disaster preparedness. For digital scholarship on South Asia, and specifically a historical view of environmental change, integrating these historical themes necessitates large scale data analysis.
