What is Varalakshmi Vratham?

Vara Lakshmi Vratham is a hindu festival which is celebrated on the Friday before the full moon in the month “Aadi”. This festival propitiates Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. Vara Lakshmi is known for granting all the boons of her devotees for the word “Vara” means boon. Among the other Lakshmi festivities Varalakshmi Vratham is very popular and considered auspicious because of its strict observance of certain austerities.
Performing the rituals on this particular day will be of fruitful results to married women for it blesses their husbands with well being and good health.

Why Varalakshmi Vratham?

According to Skanda Purana, once Goddess Parvathi inquire Lord Shiva about a vratha for women. Lord Shiva then narrated the importance of Varalakshmi Viratham. To illustrate the importance of the same, Lord Shiva narrated the story of Charumati.
According to the story a woman named Charumathi lived once who was so devoted to her husband and family. Pleased with her devotion to her husband and family, Goddess Lakshmi appeared in her dream and told her to carry out Vratham.

“Padmaasane Padmakare sarva lokaika poojithe
Narayana priyadevi supreethaa bhava sarvada”

Charumathi followed Lakshmi’s instructions and carried out the vratha with ultimate sincerity. She engaged all her neighbors, friends and relatives in the pooja with piety and good heart. As a result of her devotion in the pooja Charumathi was showered with the nine precious gems, gold, pearls, emeralds, diamonds etc. and the people who participated in the pooja were blessed with wealth and prosperity by Goddess Lakshmi.
