“LEADERSHIP IS LIFTING A PERSON’S VISION TO HIGH SIGHTS, THE RAISING OF A PERSON’S PERFORMANCE TO A HIGHER STANDARD, THE BUILDING OF A PERSONALITY BEYOND ITS NORMAL LIMITATIONS.” “THE ULTIMATE MEASURE OF A MAN IS NOT WHERE HE STANDS IN MOMENTS OF COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE, BUT WHERE HE STANDS AT TIMES OF CHALLENGE AND CONTROVERSY.”
CONTEXT
Most of the Managerial functions -Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Directing and Controlling- have been effectively engaged with, by the ‘erstwhile Manager’. The humongous challenge for today’s Managers is to outgrow the preoccupation with Managerial functions and swiftly move towards what it takes to become a Dynamic Leader. This entails that the Manager, while having to continue discharging the core Managerial functions, he/she needs to consciously visualise and surge ahead towards exercising dynamic leadership. The preoccupation of Managers with their designation, hierarchy level, functional tag, have to give away towards a leadership pinnacle that leverages the power and potential of people he/she has a privilege to lead.
Difference between Manager v Leader
Manager is impersonal; Leader is compassionate. Manager says “I”; Leader says “We”. Manager uses people; Leader develops people. Manager inspires fear; Leader earns respect. Manager takes credit; Leader gives credit. Manager micromanages; Leader delegates. Manager says “Go”; Leader says “Let’s Go”. Manager thinks short term; Leader thinks long term. Manager is your boss; Leader is your colleague. Manager is focussed on process; Leader is focussed on people.
