“TAKE BACK THE NIGHT”
Event: Take Back the Night, 2013
Organizers: Aks Foundation
Mission: The mission of Aks Foundation is to organize events in Pune to raise awareness amongst the populace regarding rampant sexual violence prevalent in our society today and to let it be known that this violence, or violence of any other kind, will not be tolerated by our community. Although the Delhi Rape Case shocked the nation and brought our attention to this heinous crime; sexual Assault has been a reality for decades and the statistics are alarming.
April is universally celebrated as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. “Take Back the Night” first appeared in Europe in 1976 and is today a sign of empowerment for men, women, and children across the world.
“Take Back the Night”, Pune, is an annual event organized by Aks Counseling and Training Agency to spread awareness about Sexual Assault and to take a stand to ‘reclaim the night’ for our women and children. This year we have had the good fortune of being registered as an NGO. Under Aks Foundation this year we are trying to raise money to set up two 24-7 crisis lines to assist victims of violence and abuse. 2013 is the 5th Year of Take back the Night and we decided to do something we have never done before!! This year we propose to have an art exhibition with paintings made by students from Mercedes Benz International School. The venue will also have small stalls to keep kids entertained like face painting, diya painting and others. All money raised will go into the training of the new volunteers and interns at Aks Foundation who will take crisis calls 24-7. We will provide financial assistance to families and help them rehabilitate the victim, provide counseling and also to hire lawyers to keep perpetrators in prison.
“Take Back the Night” is an endeavor to encourage everyone to talk openly about sexual assault, incest, rape, sexual abuse and stalking so that victims of sexual assault can free themselves from the fear, shame and guilt that prevents them from living a normal life. We can and we will, help them lead a normal life without a sense of fear or guilt caused by the trauma of Sexual Abuse. The only way we can do this is by empowering survivors and speaking openly about the issue. Silence hurts and we need to start talking about sexual assault, a reality in our society today.
Childhood survivors of sexual violence need empathy, treatment, education, counseling and support to deal with the repercussions of sexual abuse. We at Aks Counseling Agency will ensure that we go out of the way to help victims of sexual assault through recovery so that each victim is a survivor and a victim no more.
The Event: “Take Back the Night, 2013” will be held on 18th April, 2013. We will display the exceptional art work done by the students of MBIS on Art for Action day held in February, 2013. We are using the power of art to spread the message. Let us TAKE BACK THE NIGHT and reclaim it as ours!!
