The journey of taxation of services began by selective taxation of just three services on July 1, 1994. After appearing largely as just-another-tax for the first 8 years, with collections touching INR 3,302 crore in 2001-02, Service Tax has took a giant leap in the next 7 years on account of wider coverage as well as increase in tax rate. The previous fiscal year's collections have touched INR 132697 crore, and the budgeted target for the Year ended 2014 is INR 174846 crores. Thus Service Tax has become one of the most widely collected and encountered tax in the business landscape of India over a decade's time.
The Finance Bill, 2014 got the assent of Hon'ble President of India on 6th August, 2014.
