During the Italian Risorgimento, in the Austrian occupied Lombardy, Franco Maironi a young man of noble descent marries Luisa, a humble clerk's daughter, against the wishes of Marquess Orsola Maironi, his grandmother, who makes their lives miserable. Soon, little Maria is born to the couple. Due to financial constraints Franco is forced to go to Turin in search of a job. During his absence, little Maria drowns in Lake Como and Luisa is driven to the brink of madness. Franco returns home for a short time only to find Luisa cold towards him. During the Second Italian War of Independence Franco becomes a volunteer soldier and again meets his wife by Lake Maggiore, sure that she still loves him and well aware that he might die.
Based on the 1895 novel by Antonio Fogazzaro, the film was one of the first colossal and highly successful films of Italian cinema.
