The aim of this walking tour that I conduct via SeekSherpa is to enthral you with the mysteries of the Ridge!
This walk around and through the Ridge will, therefore, touch all these spheres and spaces. Starting from the Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station, it will move up Cavalry Lane and past Gwyer Hall to circumambulate Flagstaff Tower, skim by Khooni Jheel, wander up Pir Gaib, rest in the veranda of Hindu Rao, ruminate under the shadow of the Mutiny Memorial, and end with breakfast in Kamla Nagar. These spheres cover millennia of habitation and civilizational effort, and this walk will endeavour to convey some sense of this effort and its progression in our times.
The Ridge in Delhi is the oldest living heritage in this city, and is home to layers of traditions, legacies, and memories. The northern spur of this Ridge, tail end of the larger Aravalli Range, is hemmed in closely by densely congested residential, mixed-use residential and commercial, and educational neighbourhoods and is the site of a curious array of civilizational wreckage. Sultans, badhshahs, and emperors have left their marks on it, and even now the mundane business of developing Delhi chisels its way into its heart. Being uphill from the Main Campus of the University of Delhi, the Ridge is also a haunt of star-crossed lovers, whose amours mingle with the antics of its resident monkey hordes and the glares of its brisk bourgeois walkers to render the whole a simultaneously seedy and respectable veneer.
