Product Design

Product Design isn’t about creating something. It’s about researching how people and technology work together to improve the world. Product designers design a wide range of items, from day-to-day items like mobile phones to household appliances to cars, to larger things like industrial tools, equipment and machinery, as well as medical products. Every item people touch, every item people use on a daily basis, every product on a store’s shelves, they all have something in common. Someone had to design them before they made it to market or to consumers. There are several steps involved in designing a product and getting it into a consumer’s hands. A designer is involved in all the stages of product design: analysis of an idea or problem, defining the product’s concept, and, finally, synthesis of the product concept, turning the concept into reality.

The Product Design training is the first of its type in India where students design and develop new and actual products by combining creative, aesthetic and technical design skills, with a background of engineering science. They design new product that satisfies the original functional specification and is appealing to the potential market. The Training provides student means to take his/her concept sketches through the basic design, engineering, production and marketing stages that are required before a customer can purchase a finished article. 


Course Overview

  1. Intensive 3 Months Course covering all aspects of Product Design

  3. Hands on Training on CAD with focus on Parametric Modeling, Generative Shape Design, Shape Design and Styling
  4. Reverse Engineering on household product
  5. Conceptual & Futuristic Design Projects
  6. DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) activity on mechanical products (such as cordless screw driver, drill machine, glue gun, etc.). Activity based on Durham Post it method for Manual Assembly and Manufacturing Methodology
  7. Real time Project on Product Design.
  8. 3D Printing / Prototyping of the designed product
  9. Assistance in Portfolio Preparation



Reverse Engineering

Reverse Engineering introduces the students to some of the key skills a designer requires to develop successful products. Students work on open ended project which involves the  reverse engineering of any household product  and the techniques associated about that can be used to reverse engineer it. They explore a range of 2-D and 3-D visualization techniques.  The main aim is to introduce students to the latest 3D tools and techniques used by designers so that they develop a wider knowledge and understanding of integrated systems design.

Learning Outcomes:  

  • On successful completion of the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the following:
  • Parametric modeling - the master model concept
  • 'Design for Manufacture and Assembly' (DFMA)
  • Traditional management of assemblies using a 'Bill of Materials' (BOM)
  • Industry standard technical drawings
  • Working from existing specifications and technical drawings
  • Translating concepts and ideas into non-ambiguous 3D models in virtual space


Design for Environment, Manufacturing and Assembly

A successful design must consider all relevant considerations throughout the life cycle of a product by analyzing the causes and effects of the product. Successful products are designed not only to benefit the user, but to be environment friendly, easy and cost effective to manufacture, assemble, install, maintain, and disassemble for recycling or re-use. The aim of this module is to provide an introduction to the tools and methods of Eco-design, Design for Manufacture and Assembly using real, everyday products as examples. The module will require the strip-down of a variety of household products (e.g. electric screwdriver, toaster, electric kettle etc.), the investigation and understanding of the functions and features of these products, and the redesign of the products. It will therefore enable the practical application of:

  • Real engineering design techniques;
  • Eco-design as an engineering tool;
  • The relationship between Eco-Design and Design for Sustainability
  • The principles of design for manufacture and assembly
  • The conflict between eco-design, design for manufacture and design for assembly
  • Evaluating and improving existing designs.
  • Choosing eco-design, manufacturing and assembly methods.
  • Making complex design decisions at various points throughout the design process based on conflicting design requirements.


Industrial Design

Industrial design (ID) is the professional service of creating and developing concepts and specifications that optimize the function, value and appearance of products and systems for the mutual benefit of both user and manufacturer. The aims of the module is to teach the basics of Industrial Design including drawing, graphical, presentation and design communication skills.  Students come to know about the role the Industrial Designer plays in the development of a new or existing products.

Learning Outcomes   

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • the processes of designing within the context of Industrial Design including drawing, graphical, presentation and design communication skills
  • the importance of human perception with respect to the end use of a product
  • anthropometrics
  • visual presentation skills
  • conceptualizing designs
  • sketching objectively and imaginatively in a confident and appropriate manner
  • implementing graphical and typographical techniques.


Product Modeling and Virtual Reality

Finally students do project on Product Design where they examine what it takes to bring a new product off the drawing board, through virtual development, and into a modern pre-tooling 'pre-sales' promotional environment. This project provides a modern approach to new product development process especially on the early phase of design concept and creates awareness of sustainability concept within the context of product life cycle. This module also includes an overview and introduction to the area of modeling and virtual reality in design on a practical level. Students are encouraged to examine how this process is inextricably linked to achieving success in the development of new products.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • how to identify and assess design opportunities and consider professional societal responsibilities in the context of the three pillars of sustainable development: environmental, economic and social.
  •  evaluating product design specifications
  • carrying out concept generation and selection
  • assessing the strengths and weaknesses of a consumer product
  •  analyzing and evaluating a product from the 'Sustainable Development' point of view
  • assessing the strengths and weakness of a consumer product. 
  • applying life-cycle analysis to a product.
