About The Event

Amarar Kalki's Magnum Opus 'Ponniyin Selvan' was based on the struggle in Chola Dynasty that existed in the year one thousand (1000).

The novel was published in Kalki, a Tamil Weekly, week after week from 1950 to 1955 and it has captivated the minds of thousands of people. The Ponniyin selvan which consists of five volumes is the highest sold novel in the book exhibition.

It has been a dream of many to make the novel into a film but the project could not materialized even today.

But the chennai based TVK Cultural Academy courageously came forward and produced the novel as a stage play and it has captured the minds of drama lovers and the lovers of this novel.

Kalki's main characters are Sundara Cholar, Vanthiya Thevan, Periya Pazhuvetaraiyar, Nandini, Kundavai, Vanathi, Alwarkadiyan, Ravidasan, Arulmozhi barman, Aditha karikalan, China Pazhuvetaraiyar, Josier, Poonkuzhali, Chenamudan and Mandakini . The artists who have carried the characters on their shoulders proved their calibre and done a commendable performance.

Grand sets, well delivered dialogues and the lights, music etc., deserves appreciation.  The scenes with trick shots such as Head cutting, building collapse, ship burning are commendable.

Without causing damage to main story, the natural dialogue was written. The beautiful play was directed by D. Mallick Raj.

The producer of the historical Play T. K. Ramesh said that the play was well received by thousands' of rasikas and himself as producer and his team are getting lots appreciation and approbation from the fans. It was staged in Chennai, Kovai, Tiruchi , Tirunelveli, Madurai, Bangalore etc., with wide reception.
