About The Event

FICCI feels that our industrial civilization is at a crossroads with an aging and unsustainable fossil fuel based industrial set up. The result is an all encompassing crisis bothering our government, businesses and the laymen gripped with debt crisis, lack of demand and unemployment. India with its fast growing economy and its one billion plus people is closely integrated with the rest of the world and face multiple challenges of sustaining high growth, employment amid the changing industrial set up. Worse, climate change, from fossil fuel-based industrial activity, looms on the horizon. In this context, it is becoming increasingly clear that we need to both rethink the nature of the human journey, and create a new economic narrative that can take us into a more equitable and sustainable future.

FYLs and Mr. Jeremy Rifkin, Founder and President, Foundation on Economic Trends, USA, worked together to develop a White paper based on the concept of TIR to conceptualise to the Indian scenario. The Third Industrial Revolution concept has been ratified by the European Union and is in the process of being implemented in Germany.  In Jan 2012, FICCI took the lead in bringing this concept for the first time in India in a Conference, titled, 'Mega Trends 2020: Shaping India's Future'. Apart from the Third Industrial Revolution, 5 more Mega Trends were identified which will impact India's growth story in the coming decade. The executive summary of the White Paper is enclosed for your reference.

The FICCI Young Leaders felt that there is a need to sensitize the younger generation about this new phenomenon and decided to hold the Mega Trends Road Shows across India in university campuses. In the past, Road Shows have been organized in XIM, Bhubaneswar and DTU, New Delhi. We are happy to inform you that ISB, Hyderabad is the third institution to hold this Road Show.

Given the importance of the initiative, we sincerely feel that there is a strong synergy of such platforms and thought process with your Institution. We therefore invite you to participate at the event. Enclosed are the Program brief and Draft program of the event for your kind reference.

The new era will bring with it a reorganization of power relationships across every level of society. While the fossil fuel-based First and Second Industrial Revolution scaled vertically and favored centralized, top-down organizational structures, the Third Industrial Revolution is organized nodally, scales laterally, and favors distributed and collaborative business practices that work most effectively in networks. This session will examine the new innovative, for-profit and not-for profit business models that have come up in last decade or so and how these businesses have added value or altered the way goods and services are delivered to the target population.

Plenary Session II -- Mega Trend: ‘ Intelligent Technologies and Future of work’

Major, disruptive technology advances can make redundant specific jobs that employ hundreds of thousands of people. The pace of such change is the highest in the technology and related services outsourcing arenas. The impact of such a loss of jobs could be dramatic, sending ripple effects across the Indian economy, rather than being confined to the technology industry alone. Preparing for this means identifying occupations that are potentially threatened and studying and recommending possible interventions aimed at preparing employer, employee, educational institutions, and governments for such change.
