Let\'s measure the Earth again on Winter Solstice

About The Event

SPACE would like to inform you about our upcoming event, “Project Paridhi”- Let’s Measure the Earth Again. SPACE will be conducting this project on Winter Solstice, which falls on Dec 21st, as it marks an important day in the astronomy calendar. Its gives us immense pleasure in sharing that we will be celebrating this event by using a giant sundial at Bara Pulah which was constructed during the Common Wealth Games. It will be the first time that this sundial will be used by general public in a large group to replicate an ancient experiment of measuring the Earth.

Under the guidance of SPACE educator maximum 100 participants will be performing this experiment. Participants will be selected on first come first basis. This event is open to the general public. We would like to invite you for this unique opportunity.

About Project Paridhi

Under this project, participants replicate and in fact take actual measurements of the shadows made by the sun to estimate the size of earth and its shape as done 2300 years back by astronomer - Eratosthenes. Hence, it is also called Eratosthenes experiment. The participants will actually measure the circumference of the Earth using the changing shadows of “Gnomon” (stick) as cast by Sun. It becomes interesting to do the Paridhi Project on the day of the solstice and an equinox, as the sun’s position in the sky is optimal for certain observations, although it can be done on any day of the year. This project is a showcase for proving that science can be best learnt by doing. Project Paridhi is one of the best examples of hands on science activity as one can calculate the circumference of Earth with the help of simple formulae and basic household material.

SPACE encourages everyone to do this experiment at least once in their lifetime.
