There was a time when amazing stories were narrated in the Dastangoi style – where the lilt of the sweet tongue of Urdu flowed with all its nuances from the storyteller. Over time this style of storytelling was lost in the annals of history. But since the beginning of this century, the Dastangoi style has been revived and now different languages are being incorporated in the ‘dastaan’ by the ‘dastango’ (narrator) to make them universally appealing.
Leon’s World Centre for Holistic Learning and Development is bringing this age old form of storytelling to the children with Munshi Premchand’s seminal play – Eidgah which is being staged by Grooming Babies.
It is Premchand’s innate knowledge of the human psyche and emotions that comes through in the narrative – the love between the orphan child and his grandmother; the way such a small child is able to rise above bullying and peer pressure; the naïve innocence of a child – these are all heartrendingly presented in the narration of the story. The narration is bilingual and uses Hindi and English interchangeably. This helps in retaining the core essence of the Hindustani dialect while making it universally understandable.
The story is a narrative of a young four-year orphan boy Hamid who lives with his grandmother Amina. His aged grandmother Amina fulfills their daily needs by doing some needle work for others. The story starts on Eid morning, when everyone is getting ready for the festivities. Poor Hamid doesn't have new clothes or shoes like other children and only has three paise as Idi for the festival, to spend at the fair. His friends spend their pocket money on rides, candies and buying beautiful colorful clay toys. Hamid is sorely tempted to also enjoy himself like the other kids. Will he succumb to temptation? What will Hamid spend his Idi on? Watch the play to find out.
