Karthigai Deepam though symbolises a festival of lights but its significance is so different from that of Diwali. Come the month of Karthigai, the Tiruvannamalai Arunachaleshwara Swamy temple is all set for the Karthigai Maha Deepam and this year it falls on December 2, 2017. It is also known Karthigai Pournami because it is observed on the full moon day which coincides with Karthik star. At the hill top in Tiruvannamalai, the abode of Lord Shiva, which is the ‘agni sthalam’, or representing the fire element, a special light is lit on the day called Tiruvannamalai Deepam.
Rudra Ekadasa Shanthi Vedicfire Rituals
Rudra Ekadasa Shanthi Homam
To protect devotees from bad forces and other evil, Lord Shiva took certain avatars that are fierce in nature. These avatars are 11 in number and are called Rudras with specific name for each – Mahadeva, Shiva, Maha Rudra, Shankara, Neelaholita, Eshana Rudra, Vijaya Rudra, Bheema Rudra, Devadeva, Bhavodbhava and Adityatmaka. The homa is performed by inviting eleven forms of Rudra in Agni for their blessings. It also calls upon their consorts Dhee Devi, Dhritti Devi, Ushna Devi, Uma Devi, Neeyut Devi, Sarpi Devi, Eela Devi, Ambika Devi, Ieravati Devi, Sudha Devi and Deeksha Devi respectively. The ritual neutralises karmic issues that cause problems related to health, business, finance, career etc. It also protects from the malefic effects of planets in your birth chart.
The procedure for Rudra Ekadasa Shanthi Homa involves invoking the 11 rudras to 12 kalasams, the extra one for Lord Uma Maheshwar as well.
The eleven rudras grant special boons to the devotees separately
