Karthigai Deepam though symbolises a festival of lights but its significance is so different from that of Diwali. These avatars are 11 in number and are called Rudras with specific name for each – Mahadeva, Shiva, Maha Rudra, Shankara, Neelaholita, Eshana Rudra, Vijaya Rudra, Bheema Rudra, Devadeva, Bhavodbhava and Adityatmaka. The homa is performed by inviting eleven forms of Rudra in Agni for their blessings.
