Amalin Datta, the lead designer of Sharbari (Since 1991) has been working since the early 80s. The art of design and sculpture runs in his family, with the sculpting influence coming directly from his father - the renowned muralist Alokemoy Dutta. He can sculpt and well as design, where he came of the idea to fuse the two which led to the idea of doing a fashion installation.
A fashion installation allows viewers a more up-close look at the designer’s creations. It is an evaluation of fashion beyond the runway, in a static but also in a more interactive way. The display of designer garments as an art installation has been pioneered by other international designers, but he drew the interests and abilities to actually sculpt the garments in addition to displaying creations on fabric.
There are certain cultures and subjects that have always attracted him and which he always wanted to work with. The pieces in the collection draw from a variety of influences, including (but not limited to) Oriental, Mayan, Sinhalese, Persian, African, Victorian, contemporary western, from the garments of pirates, and from pure fantasy or children’s tales.
He has been exposed to art throughout his life and his travels, be it admiring the terracotta soldiers in China, the sculptures of Rodin, or works of art at the Louvre or the Smithsonian. One can say that the inspiration and the outcome you would witness is a culmination of his personal visual experience of art.
We cordially invite you on 2nd and 3rd August at WelcomArt Gallery at ITC Sonar for a one of it’s kind visual journey to the fashion installation by Amalin Datta. There are no charges associated with visiting the exhibition.
