About The Event

This Garden City of ours has seen rapid changes to its ecosystem. Let’s study and understand what that is in your neighbourhood and what it means to us. Look at micro and macro level. This module is not just about carrying out experimentation in the Lab but also being in the field and carry out meaningful field work of observation and data collection in the true spirit of science. You will undertake following exploratory and experimental activities:

 

  • Understanding the growth and its environmental impact
  • Understanding ecological and environmental data
  • Ecological Photography
  • Phytoplankton photosynthesis
  • Observing microbial life in lakes
  • Studying diversity of Pond/Lake Vegetation
  • Lake water analysis
  • Impact of effluents on lake water
  • Transpiration under different conditions
  • Measuring air quality of Bangalore traffic islands
  • Neutralizing Acid Rain
  • Building Electrostatic Precipitator
  • Radiation (Absorbance/Reflectance)
  • Investigate the Greenhouse Effect
  • Soil erosion

 

Studying ecology is not just about current state but also understand the data and evidences captured over the period. We have added photography as one of the techniques of data capture. So bring DSLR cameras. You will learn a lot about what is happening to our city and be the ambassador of for Green Bangalore.

 

Duration: 32 hours (4 hours a day for 8 days)

Module Anchor: Atishaya

About Atishaya: Atishaya Kumar Saksham is a post-graduate from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore with a major in Earth and Environmental Science. Atishaya is deeply passionate about science and wants to promote it amongst students. Despite being selected by IIT to pursue engineering, Atishaya chose to pursue his passion for pure science and joined IISc. He is a recipient of KVPY fellowship (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojna) from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.  Atishaya’s research experience ranges from Environmental Computation and Modelling to Bio and Chemical Remediation. When he’s not immersed in scientific research, Atishaya volunteers for various social events related to education.

 

NOTE: This module would involve field trips to lakes and traffic islands of city. Participants are expected to bring their camera, preferably DSLR camera for photography.
