17th Outdoor Leadership Certification Program - 26-27-28 July 2019

GHAC is calling application from all outdoor enthusiasts who would like to master outdoor leadership skills required to conduct and lead adventure and outdoor activities.

Planning, leading, surviving and making decisions in wilderness conditions prepares one for day to day challenges of life. Learning's in the outdoors helps one internalize and personalize the experience and take the them back to their personal and professional fronts. This is the most effective way to develop leaders.

The program focuses on skills that build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping and trekking experiences in the wilderness.

This Outdoor Leadership Workshop is a highly selective process to spot and train outdoor enthusiasts to become exceptional Outdoor Leaders.

By attending this workshop, participants will get to learn

• Define the basics of Outdoor Leadership.
• Recognize the Safety requirements for conduct of Outdoor Events.
• Relate to the Group Behavior and Interpersonal skills required to conduct outdoor events.
• Relate to the Judgement and Decision Making Skills in the Outdoors.
• Demonstrate the Outdoor Safety skills required to organize and lead teams with all safety.
• Practice Wilderness Survival Skills, Map Reading and Navigation, Camping Skills, Basic First Aid, Knots and Lashings.

For Whom: Open to individuals aged 18 years and above with a passion for adventure and who want to learn Leadership, Decision Making, Teamwork, Outdoor Skills required to lead adventure and outbound expeditions.

Prerequisites: Active GHAC Members who have done 3 Local and 3 overnight outstation adventure events with GHAC

Format of the Program:
1. Shortlisting and Interview
2. Selection Confirmation
3. Attend 3 Days of basics of outdoor leadership training - 19-20-21 July
4. Attend 2 days of outdoor skills practice - To be announced later.
5. Complete 6 Outdoor events under mentor-ship of a Senior Outdoor leader.

Itinerary::

Friday -26 July - Day 1:

6:00 am: Assemble at GHAC Office
6:30 am: Departure from GHAC Office.
9.30 am: Arrival at venue. Registration.
9.30 am - 10:00 am: Breakfast.
10.00 am - 11:00 am: Welcome and Introduction of Trainees. Expectations and Behavioral Contract
11.00 am - 11:30 am: Outdoor Leadership overview.
11:30 am - 01.00 pm: Outdoors - Basics, Equipment, Nutrition, Packing, Etiquette for solo and group events.
01:00 pm Lunch.
02:00 pm - 05:00 pm: Wilderness Survival Skills – Outdoors - Knife, Water, Fire, Shelter, Food. Rescue & Evacuations
05:00 pm: Tea Break
05.30 pm - 07:00 pm: Camping Skills, Prepare Campsite, Camp Hygiene, Trenching and Tent pitching
07:00 pm - Outdoor Cooking. Make your dinner
10:00 pm - Sleep & Sentry Duties.

Saturday - 27 July - Day 2

05.00 am - Wake-up and Freshen Up.
06:00 am - 06:30 am - Warm up and Stretching.
07:00 am - 09:00 am: Basics of Scrambling and Rock Climbing
09:00 am - 10:00 am Breakfast
10:00 am - 12:00 pm - Map Reading and Navigation
12:00 pm to 1:00 pm - Understanding Weather and Nature
01:00 pm - 02:00 pm - Lunch
02:00 pm - 05:00 pm: Wilderness First Aid Basics.
05:00 pm - 07:00 pm - Knots and Lashings
08:00 pm - Dinner
09.00 pm - 10:00 pm: Night Navigation Workshop. Identifying Stars and Planets / Navigation with aid of stars.

Sunday - 28 July - Day 3
05:00 am – Wake up and freshen up
06:00 am – Mild Hike and watch Sunrise
07:00 am – Connecting with Nature – Bird Watching, Identifying Flora and Fauna
08:00 am - Breakfast
09.00 am – Outdoor Leadership Skills review
10:00 am to 11:00 pm: - Leadership, Teamwork and Group Dynamics exercise
11:00 am – 01:00 pm – Practical Demonstrations of Outdoor Skills by Participants.
01:00 pm – Lunch
02:00 pm - 02.30 pm: - Handling Event Expenses and Accounts
03.00 pm - 03:30 pm: Planning a Perfect Adventure Event
04.00 pm: Outdoor Skills Assessment - Written & Practical
05:00 pm: The Journey Ahead and FAQ. Open Session for discussion and feedback from the participating volunteers.
06:00 Group Photograph and Disperse.

After the program participants are required to conduct 6 outdoor adventure events under a mentor and also complete workshops on Map Reading and Navigation, Wilderness First Aid, Leave No Trace, Wilderness Survival Skills etc.

Participants who complete the Outdoor leadership Workshop and the mandatory prerequisites will be awarded a Outdoor Leadership Certificate – Level-1 after completion of the prerequsites and evaluation of their competence with outdoor leadership skills based on field work, workshops attended and mentor feedback.

Dress Code:

Comfortable full sleeves & full pants, Casuals for Outdoors, with Sports / Trekking Shoes.

Backpack
Sleeping Bag or two bed-sheets.
Essential Toiletries
Mosquito Repellent Cream.
3 set of Clothes for Outdoors.
Sun Cap/Hat
Rain Coat / Umbrella
Reusable Water Bottle (Please, no plastic bottles.)
Tarp / Tent if you have one.
Windcheater and a Jacket for the night.(It may be chill)
Photo ID - Original and one photocopy
2- Colour passport Photos

Survival Kit:
• Whistle
• Small Mirror
• Torch
• Pen Knife / Swiss knife
• Map reading Compass (you get this at Himalaya stationary shop)
• Pencil / Paper
• 3 medium size Transparent Polythene Bags.
• Safety pins & Rubber Bands.
• Lighter / matches / flint
• Cotton
• Dental floss
• 5 meter cotton / nylon rope 1/4 inch thick ( you get this at the hardware stores)
• Basic First Aid Kit.
• Re-usable 1 litre water bottle.
• 1 Big Garbage Bag.
