About The Event

LEVEL 4: If you can thread sheer vertical ascent, handle dire acute descent and manoeuvre extremely confined bends then you would’ve conquered Kalhatty.

There ain’t many who are not familiar with Ooty (Udhagamandalam), a popular hill station located in the Niligiri Hills (Blue Mountains) which is considered the Queen of Hill stations. The beauty of this place is the entire package of fresh dew drop canopies, lush wide spread tea estates, adorable Niligiri Mountain Toy Train, its ever pleasant weather which even during the peak of summer sends a few chills down your senses, the gardens, flowers & lakes, but of course not to forget the reason Ooty is famous for – the hill station that it is, with at least 24 peaks above 2000 meters (6600 ft) this provides cyclists a paradise to hustle and glide.

Brace up for some heavy duty cycling trek, Conquering Kalhatty is a level 4 cycling trail that is going to test even regular cyclists to the core. The roads are predominantly good, meandering through tranquil dense forest region leading to one of the steepest climb you can confront with numerous hairpin bends. Cycling to Ooty is an expedition that is exasperating yet worth every drop of sweat expended.

MTB’s are suited best for this terrain to tackle and grapple through the uphill and downhill deftly. (ICYCLE.in recommends Parvath for its superior grip and aerodynamics for this trek).
Event Start: The event starts with the assembly of the cyclists at Sadashivnagar Swimming Pool at 08:00 PM the previous day, from there we take off to Bandipur in our transit vehicle covering a total transit distance of approx 270 kms overnight, we reach Bandipur by mid night and stay the night at Hotel Bandipur Plaza.

Day 1:

Day 1 starts with breakfast at Bandipur Plaza before we set off with the epic trail towards Kalhatty at 08:00 AM from MASINAGUDI, The roads are good, the surrounding packed with trees and the altitude really isn’t as steep which helps to warm yourselves to gear up for the real challenge that lies ahead. From here we head towards Masinagudi and towards Kalhatty, we take our First break after 15 kms of trek. Depending on the time taken to cover the distance, lunch will be either at Kalhatty base or the hilltop.

Make sure you’ve gathered enough steam by now, because what confronts you next is the toughest challenge of this trail and is nothing short of absolute exhilaration, only if you can make it to the top that is. The altitude elevation is over 4000 feet in under 11 kms with 36 hairpin bends, beat all this and you are sure not to contain your elation despite the need to gasp for a few long breaths. The entire journey upwards and the viewpoint presented at each of the mountain edges are breathtaking and worth it all.

Once you reach the top, it’s mostly flat roads up till the hotel. We end the day by 02:30 PM to settle in and have enough to talk about the feat unfettered. We camp for the night at KSTDC Mayura hotel.

While the first half of day 1 is predominantly flat altitude, the latter half of the day entails you to scale heights starting from 3000+ feet to 7300+ feet and lest you fail to remember the 36 hairpin bends on your way, making it a real ordeal.

Day 2:

We start Day 2 after breakfast at KSTDC at 07:30 AM, we take our first break after 10 kms at the Dodda Betta base, from there we ascend uphill to the viewpoint where you get a 360* view of Ooty through a telescope and after enjoy a short break there we head towards Coonoor for about 25 kms which is all downhill, requiring caution since the descent is really steep.

Event End: Your cycling trail ends at the Coonoor Railway Station, from where you’ll board the renowned Ooty Toy Train, what’s a trip to Ooty without the train ride. We reach KSTDC by 01:00 PM for lunch and post lunch at 02:00 PM we start our journey back to Bangalore in our transit vehicle and reach Sadashivnagar Swimming Pool by 08:00 PM.

Day 2 poses lesser challenge compared to the day earlier, except for an ascent of 1100 feet, rest of the trail is mostly downhill and relatively shorter and quicker compared to the day prior. Roads are predominantly good (fully tarmac) though steep so it’s relatively a relaxing day for you to glide through the breeze and enjoy the scenery.
