About The Event

Team NGOBOX in collaboration with FICCI Aditya Birla CSR Centre for Excellence is organizing a one day conference on the theme of ‘Better Healthcare through CSR’ on24th September 2013. The venue for the conference is India International Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. The conference aims to bring the business, civil society and the think-tank under one roof, to chart out a strategy to enable cross-sector partnerships to improve healthcare services and infrastructure in the country.

The context

Recently OECD stated that India is the world’s third largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP). Indian economy has been recording relatively better growth-rate when compared to that of the developed countries. The number of high net worth individuals (HNIs) has been increasing year after year and Indian companies are acquiring European companies and strengthening their global presence; giving obvious signs of economic prudence.

At the same time India’s legislative and policy developments are creating an environment wherein companies are encouraged to take social responsibilities and contribute towards development at the grass-root level.  Business regulations by the Department of Public Enterprises’ Guidelines on Corporate Social Responsibility) (2009 & 2013), Ministry of Corporate Affairs’ National Voluntary Guidelines on Social, Environmental & Economic responsibilities of Business (NVGs) (2011), SEBI’s directives on mandatory reporting on CSR (2012) for top 100 BSE and NSE listed companies and proposed New Companies Bill, are creating an impetus for businesses to embrace the idea of social and environmental responsibility. All of these guidelines or provisions list healthcare as one common but priority intervention area for the companies.

With meager investments, weak policies and dilapidated public infrastructure, India is facing daunting public health challenges. Maternal and infant mortality rates are high. Malaria and tuberculosis persist stubbornly. Non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and cancer are prevalent and increasing. And many, especially the poor, lack good and affordable health care. With an annual investment of over INR 1800cr by Public Sector Enterprises (PSUs) on CSR  and expected annual investments of INR 10000 cr by companies; once the New Companies Bill is passed by Rajya Sabha, there are huge opportunities to improve healthcare services and infrastructure through CSR partnerships.

In this evolving context of CSR, it is the right time for companies, civil society organizations and government to come together to discuss and explore various models for partnerships, innovations and approaches. The broader objectives of the conference are to:-

  • Discuss the scope of engaging businesses in healthcare
  • Explore cross-sector partnerships through CSR
  • Present ICT enabled innovative models and options for replication and scaling up.

This Conference seeks the convergence of ideas, thoughts and experiences of leaders from the businesses, NGOs, healthcare expert agencies and Government agencies.
