Garish vs Global

Every co-founder of a startup knows the software works, but clients or end-users reject the software because they find the colors garish. What colors and tones appeal to audiences in USA and Europe, the Middle-East, Far-East, Latin American, and African countries? Even if your startup is focussed on India, colors that work for the northern states are perceived as too ethnic for other states.

Code vs Choice

A developer may know how to mark colors in code, but may not know which colors to choose that will make the user-interface design more intuitive to the end-user. Likewise, a developer may write code but not necessarily know what makes a design intuitive. They don't teach color and intuition in any software engineering course, even though every job demands it.

Confusion vs Order

Using color poorly in your design can confuse your users. In the hands of masters, color brings meaning, order, beauty, emotional impact, and strong cultural resonances to your design. Color is a vital ingredient to the success or failure of any smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch app, website, online ads, and especially in the emerging world of smart TV apps, iOS or Android in the car dashboard, and Internet of Things (IoT).

This unique workshop approaches all the challenges of user-interface design and user-experience, with a special focus on color. We learn how to author more professional and even stunningly beautiful user-interface designs and user-experiences. We also discover there are several challenges to UI design and UX, which existing approaches do not solve elegantly enough. Here's where we bring these fresh insights into color. For communicating and possibly achieving breakthroughs in user-interface design and user-experience.

This is the 35th incarnation of the Design workshops that 'Dive' into user-interface design and user-experience. These workshops are transforming how professionals and companies in India approach design, making them more competent and more successful in the world. This brand-new workshop is based on the fantastic feedback and response from hundreds of participants to the Design workshops across Delhi, Gurgaon, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Chandigarh, NOIDA. So here it is: two half-days, devoted to all aspects of just one topic: how to make user-interface design that is more interactive, more playful, more engaging, more rewarding.

This workshop is deliberately designed for fewer participants, to keep the interactions, discussions, and brainstorming sessions more focussed, more meaningful, and more efficient. Less is more.

Audience Profile:

1. English-speaking


2. Disposition: Must have an inclination or disposition or some expression towards visual arts. This could be as basic as an interest in photography; or have rudimentary skills in sketching, illustrating, or painting; graphic-design; film-production, or any other form of visual arts. Definitely must be comfortable with using a pencil and paper for drawing simple things like flow-charts, simple charts, boxes, arrows, lines, etc.


3. Should have some basic understanding of how to dabble with any graphics software, even if as a newbie or an amateur.


4. Nope, skills in HTML, web-development, or app-development, or software engineering, are not required for this workshop. Good if you have them, but we will strictly focus on 'design' per se, and not on 'development'.

2. How color can create the most universally understood of all designs, ever. But fails.

3. Understanding Color Theory.

4. What Color encodes: Cognitively. Psychologically. Emotionally. Culturally. And more.

5. How to make your own unique design language, and how to define the role of color through your design language. And why if you get this, you get everything.

6.What the W3C guidelines on color contrast-ratio mean and how to apply them in the user-interface of your web and app design.

7. Say Hello! to your User-Personas. Imagine User-Case Scenarios. Design with Empathy.

8. Tools for wireframing, prototyping, colors, color-models, and fixing your design workflow

 

9. Colors lead to gradients, textures, and shadows. So how to follow through meticulously.

 10. Interaction design: The art and approach to micro-interactions.

11. Minimize interference and remove clutter.

12. Design feedback: Design for a narrowing presence-of-mind.

13. The future of color in UI design and UX.

Notes:

  1. This course guideline is indicative, and may be tweaked further.

  2. The workshop does not cover branding or corporate branding with color. It limits itself to the multi-dimensional use of color for user-interface design and UX, for a product or a service.

  3. Color Management Systems (CMS) and color-calibration are highly technical and specialised topics, meant for print-production, video, and other 'professional-color' workflows. This workshop does not touch on these topics at all, even though I have regularly conducted workshops on these topics for more than 15 years.


Course Deliverable:

At the end of the course, a reasonably intelligent participant will be able to handle user-interface design and user-experience project far more professionally.

A newbie will be able to dive in immediately into their first UI design project and handle it competently.

A participant will know how to harness the powers of color for better communication of design and meaning. Each participant will be able to correct existing problems in design caused by color, and author designs that are more successful.

The course aids such a participant by:

  • Offering a breakthrough in thinking and applying color for more thoughtful, meaningful, and even playful design.

  • Introducing the tools and techniques required.

  • Demonstrating how to stay ahead of the competition through color and design trend analysis.

  • Upgrading design skills significantly to produce better, more aesthetic, more intuitive, and visually delightful design 

Suggested Project(s):

Newbies will be suggested small simple projects that are great challenges in user-interface design for apps and websites, in the 21st century. Yet these are simple utility, widget, or apps with limited functionality. These are fundamental design challenges to invoke 'design-think' in them. These are strictly optional.

Participants may bring in existing projects for design brainstorming. Do note there is obviously no time to handle any hands-on design-production of digital artworks, much less demand professional inputs. Design brainstorming on existing projects will definitely be time-limited. It will be open to all participants and used only as a tool for learning. It will be optional, and at the sole discretion of the trainer.

Participants may be suggested inspiring everyday project(s) especially for mobile-apps, and optionally even for gadget-interface design. Armed with the introduction and the knowledge from this short workshop, participants may pursue the design and development of their projects on their own initiative, if they wish.
