About The Event

26th January marks a historic day in the Indian history because on this day the key of freedom was handed to each Indian’s hand by the Constitution. For a wanderer’s soul like ours, travel is instant freedom. Hence, we are commencing our chopta trek on this historic day from God’s own spiritual land of Haridwar.

Chopta is also known as mini Switzerland of India due to its enchanting 180 degree view of the imposing Himalayan range including Trishul, Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba. The Chopta region is rich in varied flora and fauna, with plenty of Rhododendron and Deodar trees all around. In our expedition, we will be covering Tungnath (the highest Shiva temple in the world) and Chandrashila Peak located at over 4000 (13000ft meters) offering a 360 degree view the valley. Chandrashila Trek with Chopta and Tungnath is one of the most exciting and challenging trails you can tread in Uttarakhand. This trek is ideal for a beginner as well as an experienced trekker.

For a trekker, challenge offers opportunity and we at The Great Escape take all efforts to ensure that you have an exhilarating trekking experience. Strap on those shoes and escape with us to experience a freedom you were meant to live.

DETAILED ITINERARY:

Saturday, 27th January
Haridwar to Sari (220kms)
A pick up for the team from Haridwar station will be arranged at 6 am. The route from Haridwar To Sari along the river is pretty picturesque, with the highlight being Devprayag - a town marking the gorgeous confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi river. Sari village looks picture perfect with its wooden houses across the mountain backdrop and the green meadows.

Sunday, 28th January
Sari (6554ft) to Deorital (7998ft)
Gear up! Our trek starts today. A short 3 km trail to the magnificent Deorital lake with the Chaukhamba peak as it’s backdrop.

After breakfast we start our hike to Deorital. From the small bazar of Sari village a track starts winding up and leaves the village. Initially the trail is gradual and becomes steeper at the later half. We stay at Deorital for the night. This place is a delight for bird watchers. One can spot the common species of that region such as Black Jay, Blue Magpie and various species of Thrushes. In the evening, the various colors of the sunset reflects on the lake creating a spectacular view. We wind up our day with campfire and stargazing in the night.

Monday, 29th January
Deorital (7998ft) to Chopta (8792ft)
Today’s trail is sprinkled with little shrines that stand out in the greenness by the red and yellow flags tied on them. The trail offers splendid views of the Chandrashila peak as it passes through the Kedarnath Sanctuary. Throughout the route Rhododendron and maples eclipse the forest path, spreading a cool and rejuvenating vibe. As we keep walking on the trail, a generous cover of the Chopta forest gives us respite from the sun. Here, in this quiet section of the forest, there is a high chance of spotting the Himalayan woodpecker and Verditer flycatcher.

As we approach the meadows of Rohini Bugyal, we will find a cluster of huts and meet shepherds from local villages grazing their livestock. This part of the forest has some of the oldest oak, maple and rhododendron trees of Kedarnath Sanctuary. Not far from here, we will connect to the road head leading to Chopta village.

Tuesday, 30th January
Chopta Circuit
A much deserved rest day, this day can be spent in various way. Explore the Chopta forest or just laze around in Chopta, building a snowman. But be prepared, this is the day of the epic snow fight and there will be snow bombs coming your way.

Wednesday, 31st January
Chopta(8792 ft) to Chandrashila (13123 ft) via Tungnath and back to Chopta
Wake up early in the morning as we climb to Tungnath and further to the summit of Chandrashila. The prominently marked track to Tungnath starts from Chopta main strip and is made of concrete throughout, which makes it fairly easy to climb.

The trail to Tungnath ascends sharply via a series of 11 scissor bends. The walk is pleasant, but is a very steep climb. The trek up to Tungnath temple is approximately 2 km. After we reach the 10 th bend, we need to look out for a flag and a small temple. Chandrashila peak is 1.5 km above the temple complex. The route to Chandrashila peak is from behind the temple. During winter this trail is completely covered in snow. The climb from Tungnath to Chandrashila is a 600 ft ascent and is a very steep climb.

Once at the top of the peak, we get a 360 degree view of the mountains of Garhwal and Kumaon. Walk past the temple and see some great mountains of Uttarakhand, like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nandaghunti, Kamet, Dunagiri, Chaukhamba, Kedar dome, Thalaysagar, Gangotri ranges, Jahanukut and more. After absorbing the beautiful view, trek back to Chopta via the same route.
