The Artform

A time travel, a peep into the art culture of Telangana, would bring you to Cheriyal Paintings. Spanning beyond being merely an art form, its soul has been a part of an over 400-year old rich storytelling tradition. Vivid hues of naturally extracted colors flow on the canvas of a handspun Khadi cloth to bring stories of Indian Mythology and Folklore to life. Scrolls running over 45 feet in length, would mimic a film roll, waiting to be unwound and enthrall the audience visually. Beautiful Masks and dolls of the characters from the stories were also fashioned by the artisans.

About the Artist

A scion of the only family practicing the art form, for Dhanalakota Rakesh, the art has been passed on as a family heirloom. Son of the reputed State and National Merit Awardee D.Vaikuntham Nakash, Rakesh is a technology graduate and has used this medium to create an awareness of the Art form. He has conducted workshops on many national and international platforms and their works have been collected by the prestigious VAM Museum in London and Centre for Indian and South Asian Studies, Paris, among the many notable others.
