History of Mysore

An ancient city which is believed to have existed from the time of Emperor Ashoka's rule, Mysore has grown into one of the biggest cities in Karnataka. From the 10th century onwards there is documented evidence of the role played by this city in various historical events. It became the headquarters of the Wodeyar dynasty in 1584 AD, and since then there has been no turning back. Besides being one of the country's top tourist destinations, it is also known for its cleanliness and old world charm.

People and Culture of Mysore

The people of this city of palaces are a laidback lot and are by and large peaceful. Kannada is widely spoken and people of all faiths including Hindus, Muslims, and Christians live and here. Some of their places of worship date back centuries and figure on the list of places to visit in Mysore. Known as the cultural capital of the state, the city is known for its patronage of the arts. The Dasara celebrations here are globally famous and many choose to take a Mysore tour during this time. Mysore paintings and Ganjifa Art are promoted here.

Things To Do in Mysore

A short trip might not suffice to cover all Mysore attractions. Amba Vilas Palace, popularly known as Mysore Palace, was once the official residence of the royal family. The beautiful botanical park and musical fountain at Brindavan Gardens are a hit with tourists on Mysore sightseeing trips. Yet another of the Mysore tourist places that appeal to the young and old alike is the sprawling Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens. Commonly known as Mysore zoo, it is one of the oldest zoos in the country and has a successful breeding track record not to mention being one of the best Mysore places to visit even with returning visitors. Jagan Mohan Palace, Rail Museum, Folklore Museum, Chamundi Hills, St Philomena's Church, and Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary are some other places to see in Mysore. The numerous parks offer a choice of picnic spots in Mysore for locals and visitors alike.

Food and Shopping in Mysore

Rice is the staple food of people in the region and dishes like Chitranna and Puliyogare are to be tasted when on a trip to Mysore. The city's namesake Mysore Pak, jalebis, and rava under are some of the lip smacking desserts any visitor should sample. If you find time after ticking off the things to do in Mysore list, pick up a silk saree or two to take home. Mysore silk is globally known as one of the finest and so are the exquisite rosewood inlay products.
