Alliance Française, in collaboration with Film and Television Institute of India, presents Buster Keaton’s The General,
Accompanied by Radiomentale
After the Fête de la Musique - International Music Day celebrations across the city on 21st June, the festivities continue with this one of a kind Ciné-Concert – an American classic silent movie accompanied by contemporary music.
The film, The General (USA, 1927, 97’), is an imaginative masterpiece of dead-pan "Stone-Face" Buster Keaton comedy, generally regarded as one of the greatest of all silent comedies (and Keaton's own favorite) - and undoubtedly the best train film ever made.
This movie will be accompanied by contemporary electronic music by Radiomentale who will be performing using turntables.
ABOUT “THE GENERAL”
(USA, 1927, 97’)
When Union spies steal an engineer's beloved locomotive, he pursues it single handedly and straight through enemy lines. Johnnie loves his train ("The General") and Annabelle Lee. When the Civil War begins he is turned down for service because he's more valuable as an engineer. Annabelle thinks it's because he's a coward. Union spies capture The General with Annabelle on board. Johnnie must rescue both his loves.
Buster Keaton was an American comic actor, filmmaker, producer and writer. He was best known for his silent films, in which his trademark was physical comedy with a consistently stoic, deadpan expression, earning him the nickname "The Great Stone Face"

WHAT IS A CINÉ-CONCERT?
The concept comes from the very beginning of the cinema, when all films were silent, and so accompanied by the live execution of music, generally especially composed or improvised for the movie. Long lost tradition, the concept of ciné-concert gor a new birth in France from 1976, making people rediscover the magic and the depth of silent films.
