Ahmedabad International Poetry Festival
Ahmedabad is going to witness its first and very exciting International Poetry Festival from July 29th to July 31st 2016.
The Festival will witness poetry enthusiasts from all over Gujarat who will participate in creative writing workshops, intensive performance poetry sessions, book signings and a Grand Spoken Word Show with a line up that includes World Slam Champion Ikenna Onyegbula from Canada, Performance Poet Andy Conner from United Kingdom and Slam Poet Kyle Louw from South Africa.
The festival will see a huge participation from the city youth who for the very first time will experience a space that provides medium of expression through Spoken Word Poetry.
Meet Internationally Established Poets
Ikenna Onyegbula is the most decorated competitive spoken word poet in Canadian history and this summer, he will be performing his poetry and conducting workshops at Ahmedabad International Poetry Festival.
Currently residing in Toronto, Canada, he is the 2014 World Poetry Slam Champion, 2014 Canadian Poet of Honour, 2013 & 2011 Canadian Individual Poetry slam Champion, 2010 & 2009 Canadian Team Poetry Slam Champion, and Founder and Artistic Director of Canada’s National Youth Poetry Festival.
Andy Conner is a UK-based poet with a long track record of performing his work internationally. His radio credits include BBC Radio 4.
A highly dramatic and visual performer, Conner's work ranges from the humorous to the very dark. Many of his poems are for young people who deal with bullying and domestic violence. Andy Conner has performed at Delhi Poetry Slam, Jaipur Literature Festival and India International Centre among other renowned stages.
Kyle Louw is an internationally recognised spoken word poet who resides in Cape Town, South Africa. Kyle's journey began when he stumbled across a Suli Breaks video back in 2012.
In record breaking time, Kyle went from that first shaky sharing to representing the province in the 2nd annual South African national slam. He lifted 4 Poetry Slam Championship Titles and remains the only poet to hold a belt from each major Cape Town based poetry movement. He also managed to squeeze in a Best English Poet award and a TEDxCapetown speaker spot.
2 PM to 4 PM: Meet and Greet
International Poets will introduce themselves and their background of work. The participants will interact with the poets and join in conversations with each other.
4 PM to 6 PM: Bringing Poetry to Life
A creative writing session with Birmingham based poet Andy Conner where participants will learn the tools of expressing their thoughts through poetry. The session will focus on activities that will help participants understand the emotional side of writing a poem and gaining the confidence to pen emotional experiences through poetic medium.
6 PM to 8 PM: Learn to Perform Your Poetry
A basic introductory session with Spoken Word Poets Kyle Louw and Ikenna Onyegbula will open new avenues for poets. This workshop will focus on basic tips on performing a poem in front of an audience. A safe space will be created where participants can let go of their inhibitions and gain the confidence to recite their poetry. Through series of activities, participants will learn to recite, perform and be confident on stage.
2 PM to 4 PM: Stage Techniques and Body Posture
This intensive session will be led by Andy Conner where participants will learn essential techniques on movement, body posture, voice modulation that are required on stage. The workshop will be fun and friendly as participants will engage with each other, share their works and speak about their personal inspiration to write poetry.
4 PM to 6 PM: Sharing Your Truth With The World
The workshop will be led by Kyle Louw where participants will be encouraged to share their honesty and turn it into poetry. This will open up participant's experiences in understanding their own feelings and using poetry as therapy.
6 PM to 8 PM: Delivering a powerful performance on stage
What are the things that go behind delivering a power performance on stage? World Slam Poetry Champion Ikenna Onyegbula will share their power techniques that makes a performance stand out on stage. Participants will be taught to use their strengths in getting the attention of the audience.
5 PM to 8 PM: Grand Spoken Word Showcase
A spoken word show will be hosted where internationally established performance poets Andy Conner, Kyle Louw & Ikenna Onyegbula will perform feature sets in front of a live audience from around Ahmedabad. Local acts will be merged into the showcase.
