“We do not inherit the world from our fathers, we borrow it from our children.”
There are five simultaneous revolutions occurring in India – urban, industrial, national, democratic and social. In no other city are these revolutions more violently apparent than Mumbai.
Rapid urbanisation is both the cause and the solution to many of the world’s most pressing social and environmental problems. Over 50% of the world’s population lives in cities today compared to just 30% in India. This has tremendous and far reaching consequences for the future of mankind. Can India find the right urban-rural balance in time? Can India lead the world by leapfrogging onto newer urban models?
By 2015, Mumbai is expected to become the most populous city in the world. At least by one definition, that makes it an excellent place to start.
Mumbai’s premier social business plan competition is designed to encourage social enterprises to develop business solutions to alleviate the city’s acute problems across six thematic areas:
The Social Venture Challenge/Mumbai will consist of three rounds, of which the final round will take place at the SP Jain Institute of Management & Research. During each round of the competition, social entrepreneurs will need to consistently present the values of their business with respect to:
Round 1 is intended to be a private screening with an expert panel of jurors judging summary business plans on a comprehensive criteria set.
Round 2 is where the excitement really begins – we invite the citizens of Mumbai to vote on executive summaries via online & mobile channels. This will be the first time ever that a business plan competition has sought a public vote.
Round 3 will be the final round of competition where 10 teams will present their full business pans to a live expert judging panel.
Teams will not only be competing for the most prestigious prize of all, the coveted Sheriff’s Award*, but will also have a chance to acquire Rs. 1,000,000* in prize money.
The prize money will be delivered to the three top teams in the form of start-up grants to be administered by the C-SEL at SPJIMR.

Second Prize: Rs.300,000
Third Prize Rs.200,000
