KITE 2016 is organized and managed by The Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad, in collaboration with Shilparamam, the arts, crafts and cultural village at Hyderabad, supported by the Department of YAT&C (Tourism), Telangana State Government. The Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad is a not-for-profit International Baccalaureate World School and is the second in the network of Aga Khan Academies established by His Highness the Aga Khan. Other key collaborators include the Tourism Department of the State Government of Gujarat, the Architecture and Design Foundation of India and the Royal Kite Flyers Club of India.
KITE 2016 is a two-day festival celebrating the rich tapestry of culture, kites and craft that Hyderabad is known for. Bringing together international teams of professional kite-flyers, along with thousands of kite-enthusiasts from around the city, the festival aims to educate and entertain through a series of kite-making workshops, kite-flying lessons, and kite-fighting competitions against the backdrop of a regional food fair, and arts and crafts mela organized by Shilparamam. For children, a diverse selection of special targeted activities including kite design, paper craft and origami will be accessible. On 14th January 2016, schools are invited to participate on a complimentary basis. Families who wish to attend KITE can do so on the 15th of January may register and purchase passes online.
Mission: This Festival aims to raise awareness of the importance of education and empowerment of girl children. Through active corporate sponsorship and large scale media exposure, KITE aspires to build solidarity around this critical issue, and generate scholarships for gifted girl children from the lower socio-economic bracket, in fulfilment of His Highness the Aga Khan’s vision and mission to prepare ‘homegrown leaders’ for the extraordinary challenges of tomorrow.
