February 29, also known as leap day or leap year day, is a date added to most years that are divisible by 4, such as 2016, 2020, and 2024.
Astro Club-Mumbai, after successfully conducting stargazing programs for more than 3 years with tremendous response from participants, we are here again with a session of stargazing which will take you to unforgettable journey to the cosmos.
This time Astro Club-Mumbai has come up with something interesting plan to make leap day memorable. On the occasion of Leap day we are hosting a trekking + camping + stargazing event @ Naneghat.
Naneghat, is a mountain pass in the Western Ghats range between the Konkan coast and the ancient town of Junnar in the Deccan plateau. The pass is about 120 kilometres north of Pune and about 165 kilometres east from Mumbai. It’s a paradise for a Stargazers and has best night sky near Mumbai and Pune.


Itinerary for the event:
Day 1-Friday-28th Feb
11.00 pm: Meeting the Astro Club team at Grandmama’s cafe Dadar (e).
11.30 pm: Board in a bus for Naneghat. Pickup points @ Sion, Maitri Park, Vashi, Kharghar, Kamothe, Lonavala, Talegaon, Chakan.
Day 2 -Saturday-29th Feb
07.00 am: Reaching Naneghat Campsite.
07.30 am: Tea & Breakfast.
08.00 am: Trekking to Jivdhan Fort (Optional, Trekking level-Medium).
11.00 am: Reaching the summit and exploring the Jivdhan fort.
12.30 pm: Start decent form Jivdhan back to Naneghat campsite.
02.00 pm: Lunch and Rest time.
05.00 pm: Tea followed by exploration of Naneghat caves.
06.30 pm: 3, 4 and 8 people shared tents will be allotted (Kindly carry own mats or sleeping bags).
07.30 pm: Introduction to stargazing, Evening sky session and Telescopic Observation. Observe Moon, Venus, Andromeda Galaxy, Orion nebula and krittika.
09.30 pm: Dinner Break.
11.30 pm: Midnight sky session and telescopic observation. Observe Clusters, galaxies and binary stars.
Day 3-Sunday-1st March
02.00 am: Tea followed by Campfire and Games.
04.00 am: Morning sky session and telescopic observation. Watch beauty of Sagittarius arm Milky Way along with Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.
06.00 am: Tea and Breakfast.
07.00 am: Start of return journey via same route.
12.00 pm: Halt for Lunch on the way.
03.00 pm: Reaching back to Mumbai.

Cost: - Rs. 2000 per participant (Non-Refundable).
Including :-Transportation To and Fro from Dadar to Naneghat, Tea & Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner, 3 & 4 people shared tent(carry your own mat/ sleeping bags) and Expertise charges.


Excluding:-Anything other than mentioned above
Things to carry:-Shoes, Warm clothes, blanket, mattress, old newspapers, small torch, water bottle, personal medication and mosquito repellent cream.


Note:-Temperature usually drop below 10 degrees during the winter nights.
Smoking and Drinking during event is strictly prohibited.
Rain, cloud cover is beyond control of organizer and in such cases one has to wait till the clouds clear.


If at all due to extreme bad weather or unavoidable circumstances the program needs to be cancelled, the participants will be notified by Mail/Whatsapp a day earlier or before 11 A.M. on the day of program.There are limited seats. So register soon.
