Increasing Database Performance in the Cloud

The Real-World Performance (RWP) Group is part of the Oracle Database Development organization. Engineers in the RWP group focus on extracting the maximum performance from the Oracle Database and hardware in the real world. We do this by identifying inefficiencies in current systems and applying modern database design and tuning techniques.

Welcome to a day packed with live demos, learning about architecture, performance and configuration. You will learn performance from the gurus that have been in this game longer than most people.

The event is targeted for:

  • Architects – See the consequences of bad design and configuration
  • Developers – See how your code, application servers, and databases can work better together
  • DBAs – You are in this heat – learn how to maximize performance and get rid of queues in the database

The RWP Group has been called out to the biggest customers and seen the most spectacular break-downs in production systems. They have collected lot of experiences and can teach you how to avoid common mistakes; systems that don’t scale and break down when put into production or on the busiest day of the year. This is not about parameter tweaking, but how myths, bad design, lack of testing, and lack of understanding causes systems to not perform and even break down.

Speaker Bio:

Andrew Holdsworth

  • 27 Years at Oracle
  • Vice President Real World Performance – Good performance is rarely an accident – Most people get the systems they deserve – “Good Enough” rarely is, aspire for excellence never “Good Enough”.

Toon Koppelaars

  •  Consulting Member of Technical Staff, Oracle Netherlands
  • Toon has been part of the Oracle eco-system since 1987, and currently member of Oracle's Real-World Performance team. We troubleshoot application performance issues in and around the DBMS, and focus on educating others about the best performance methods and techniques. Prior to joining the RWP team, Toon has been mainly involved in database application development. He is a long-time champion of the Smart Database (#SmartDB) paradigm, i.e. using the database as a processing engine, and not just as a persistence layer.

Christine Qu

  •  Christine is Software Development Manager in Oracle Real-World Performance Team, based in Shenzhen, People’s Republic of China.
  • Christine has 13 years of database performance experience, has deep understanding on real world customers’ usage and challenges of Oracle relational database systems, led and won tens of competitive PoCs and benchmarks defined by customers in China, US, India, Korea, Singapore, Australia, reviewed quite some customer application architectures, and worked on lots of performance related escalations. Improving the performance of system by orders of magnitude and speedups of 1000 fold are not uncommon.
  • Christine has rich experience on Oracle APEX development. In just a few months of project management work she developed the project management system that has been used by Real-World Performance Team since 2011.
  • Christine believes the big picture is really the most important, to achieve exceptional database performance as well as to all other aspects of life. Being on the right track gives people the exceptional rewards which are never achievable by those not on the right track, no matter how hard they work how much time they spend. With this belief, Christine has delivered the 3.5 day Real-World Performance training all over the world and trained 1000+ Oracle customers and got very positive feedback.
