What is School Kit Drive
Most of the eminent personalities across the spectrum emphasise the importance of Education in fighting the social ills - poverty, malnutrition etc. And as we all know, Education is one of the most neglected sectors of India. Addressing this issue doesn't figure in the manifestos of our National parties. The onus lies on us to correct this as it is children who are going to shape the country's future.
One of the major problems India's education sector faces is the drop-out rate tha happens primarily among the poor. And the primary reason is, obviously, they cannot afford the minimum infracture required to study. In an effort to reach out to thousands of such under-privileged children and encourage them not to drop out of schools, Youth For Seva (YFS) has taken an initiative to provide them with basic resources (School kit) that are required to continue their education. In our suvey, it has been found out that apart from solving the problem of financial constraints of the parents, it is also motivating the children to study.
Since its inception in 2010, YFS distributed 25,000 school kits to children of tribal and urban areas across the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. This year, YFS will reach out to 20,000 children across 4 states - Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Chattisgarh. Of these, 80% kits will be distributed in rural and/or tribal areas, and 20% will go to the urban poor - including 150 govt. schools across the city of Hyderabad.
The USP of this initiative is that it is entirely volunteer-driven - right from raising the funds to packing school kits to distribution of kits to children. Each kit costs Rs. 300 and for every donation made, an 80G receipt will be given which can be used for tax exemption. Write to firstname.lastname@example.org to find the YFS co-ordinator nearest to you if you are willing to donate by cheque/ cash.
Details of packing and distribution programs will be informed to all donors and volunteers ahead of time to encourage their participation in these events. After the events, reports and pictures will be uploaded on the website.
