About The Event

About the workshop:

Large corporations spend millions of dollars to store and manage the data generated by their processes. However, until now, analyzing this data to gain insights was too expensive and thus not feasible. However, with the emergence of the MapReduce paradigm and the Hadoop ecosystem, there seems to be a sudden interest in analyzing this massive amount of data.

What makes Hadoop different?

How does data analysis work via Hadoop?

What are the various products in the Hadoop ecosystem and when do we use what?

This workshop helps you answer these questions. You will also understand the challenges of large-scale data analysis. We will also look at a few case-studies during the workshop.

Pre-requisites:

  • Participants must have good knowledge of Java
  • Participants must bring their laptops with Linux Operating system and Hardware & Software pre-requisite as given below.
  • Participants must be comfortable in a Linux environment
  • Knowledge of web scale data challenges is preferred
  • Hardware pre-requisites: A minimum of 3GB of disk space per guest VM instance and at least 512MB of RAM per VM (we will be experimenting with upto 3 guest instances running in parallel)
  • Software pre-requisites: We will be setting up clusters using a Qemu/KVM environment – the host system is an Ubuntu 12.04 desktop environment and the guests are Ubuntu 12.04 server environments running via Qemu/KVM
  • A  properly functioning Internet connection

Key take-away:

  • Participants will have a good knowledge of how to get started with Hadoop to do data analysis
  • Participants will get to know what the products are in the Hadoop ecosystem and when to use what
