About The Event

IIT Madras has had an active dramatics scene for many years now. The students have successfully staged plays by playwrights ranging from Shakespeare to Agatha Christie to Mahesh Elkunchwar and Vijay Tendulkar.  ‘Stagecoach’ is the annual theatre production put up by the Thespian Club, IIT Madras.  This year, as part of Stagecoach, the Thespian Club will perform ‘Taramandal’ by Neel Chaudhuri. With the help of Crea-Shakthi’s Campus Theatre Initiative, this year Stagecoach will be staged outside of the IIT Madras campus at the T N Rajarathinam Auditorium, Chennai.

‘Taramandal’ won The Metroplus Playwright Award 2010, which is awarded every year to the best unpublished play script in English. The playwright conducted several interviews with theatre actors, background artists, bit part-players in the Mumbai film industry, television personalities and casting agents. This research went into a six-week period of workshops and improvisations with the cast of ‘Taramandal’. The final play is stitched from these experiences. It is not a sad story, but one rife with melancholy and the absurd humours that follow that most irrepressible human trait — ambition.
