Charity is not merely an objective dispensation of wealth. Rather it encompasses a subjective mental disposition to empathise and share one's feelings with fellow beings. Being conscious of other's needs in life. That is Social Consciousness. The spread of Social Consciousness in any society should eventually dispense the need for social work.
Social service is indeed a noble trait but not at the expense of developing social consciousness among people. The philosophy of Vedanta educates and inculcates the spirit of social consciousness in human beings. Through this education people will begin to empathise, serve, share and harmonise with fellow beings. When the spirit of social consciousness prevails in a community there will no longer be a need for social services. Social problem like poverty will soon cease to exist.
