About The Event

To say that Bengali cinema is the proud possessor of a rich tradition would be an understatement. The erstwhile “bioscope” which was introduced to us in the year 1890 by Shri Hiralal Sen, took rapid strides to culminate in Madan theatre’s “Bilwamangal”-signaling the infancy of Bengali cinema. Over the last 95 years, the toddler found many a patronizing hand in such luminaries as Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak, Rituparno Ghosh and other prominent as well as obscure names. With their aid, Bengali cinema has now matured through its fair share of ups and downs.

A fascinating chronicle which would enthrall history itself! Traversing the course of an eventful journey, Bengali cinema of today sports an all new attire which is unique in thought, colorful in variety, innovative in experimentation and brave in execution. In this resurgent avatar, it does not hesitate to bring up and elucidate ideas of homosexuality and pedophilia, displays our inner conflicts arising out of life’s needs and excesses in great detail and paints our innate emotions on canvas with vivid hues. Without a moment’s hesitation, a conscientious police officer declares, “সাজা ইজ অনলি ফর প্রজা” (punishment by law applies only to the ruled); the typical template of a romantic scene is blown to smithereens when on being propositioned by his lover, the startled hero blurts out, '**** মেরেছে (what the f***)”, just like the guy next door. You might ask if none of this has ever happened before on our silver screens. Well, they may have, but the presentation of all of this, at one time and in a manner never seen before, makes this new-age cinema stand out with a flavor of its own.

The crowning achievement of this era being, Bengalis are again flocking cinema halls for the film industry’s latest offerings. Be it for a film carrying some deep message which makes us think, or the newest commercial entertainer. However, for those of us who stay away from Bengal, YouTube or Torrents are the only recourse. However, the experience of movies on the big screen can never be matched by watching them on our tiny laptops and PCs. On weekends, we get to hear this complaint from every corner, but what are we to do? As the saying goes, where there’s a will, there’s a way. With the love for cinema driving us and the lack of opportunities strengthening our resolve, we swung into action and chalked out a plan to organize a full-fledged Bengali film festival in Hyderabad. For the very first time, Hyderabad will host such a cine carnival with Bengalis in Hyderabad at the helm of the initiative. The theme of this event-the resurgence of Bengali cinema in modern times.

We will bring to you some of the most prominent and acclaimed films of recent times and their producers, directors and actors. Apart from experiencing their work, this will be a one-of-a-kind platform for fun, informal interaction and exchange of ideas with some of the best known names from the industry.

All this, coming to you, in just a few days. We are super excited and ready to make this event a grand success. We need you with us to make this happen and hoping you are as excited as we are! Get ready for the event from July 18 to 20 when the first ever Bengali Film Festival in Hyderabad will be here at your doorstep.
