"Prasanna Autism Centre" Pune was set up by late Smt. Padmaja Godbole on 5th June 2000 for children afflicted with autism.

Autismis a very complex condition that is observed in the early growing-up years of some children. Its characteristics are evident by age three and the disability is life-long. Autism affects the way the person communicates and relates to other people. Children with autism have difficulties with everyday social interaction. Their ability to develop friendship is generally limited as is their capacity to understand other people’s emotions.  Autism is more prevalent among boys than girls (the ratio being 4:1) and 75% of autistic children also have learning disabilities.

Prasanna Autism Centre has about 38 children and works from Monday to Friday from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm. When the children arrive in the centre in the morning they first remove their footwear and then go to their respective classrooms. A normal day at the centre begins with prayers. Thereafter they are given a glass of milk and biscuits.  By 10 o’clock the children settle down either for one-on-one training and therapy sessions with their teachers or for other related activities.  Lunch time is between 12.00 noon and 12.30 p.m., when the children are served hot, nutritious meals freshly cooked in the centre’s kitchen. Thereafter, it is rest time till 1.00 p.m. Children are given different therapies at the centre, such as occupational therapy, speech therapy, behavioural therapy, etc. From 1.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m., they are kept busy with various activities like music, arts and crafts, self-help skills, and yoga.  At 3.00 p.m. it is time again for a glass of milk before their day, at the centre, ends with prayers at 3.30 p.m.

This is the only centre of its kind in Pune that functions with three different media of instruction – Marathi, English and Hindi – for the 38 children on its rolls. In addition, the centre also conducts ‘outreach’ programmes for children and parents from places outside Pune. These programmes involve at least a week of therapy to evaluate the children and advise and train their parents to work with them.

Recognising the work done by the centre, the SAKAL” SOCIAL FOUNDATION honoured  late Smt.Padmaja Godbole with the ‘ADARSH GRIHA MATA” award. She was also honoured by the SURYAKANT PAWAR FOUNDATION for her work in the field of Autism. Mrs. Sadhana Godbole is the Managing Director and looks after the administration and the day to day working of the centre. The centre has 15 teachers in a strength of 25 dedicated employees that includes therapists and other staff.  The centre has no government support and is an independent entity.

We would be happy if you visit our centre and see for yourself the good work done here. We look forward to your valuable support and help.
