You have been looking at pictures of them or have probably been drooling over them in movies and videos on TV, but now you can actually touch and feel one of these beauties when it lands on the Indian shores sometimes soon. No guesses? We’re talking about that beautiful hunk of steel, one of the oldest and most iconic big car of all times – the Jeep.
We may already have a bevy of SUVs in the country but nothing can compare to a Jeep in size, strength, beauty and the ability to drive over the toughest terrain. For car buffs it is a dream of a car and its entry in India is being made possible by Fiat, the new owner of Jeep since the last few years. According to sources, the models most likely to enter India are the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Wrangler.
These two cars best suited to the Indian terrain will soon see the two models entering in two different categories. While the Grand Cherokee with its muscular build but contemporary design and classic style elements is branded as a premium luxury vehicle, the Wrangler will be touted as a tough lifestyle product able to conquer any terrain and road.
The 2012 Grand Cherokee has undergone numerous updates. The signature seven-slot grille, round headlamps and trapezoidal wheel arches have not changed at all, but the interior became a lot more classier and elegant with cleanly styled dash, tight seams, high-quality materials and consistent textures from door to dash. The five-seater, 2,987cc engine car also has large plush seats big enough to fit anybody comfortably. Other standard features include automatic headlights, fog lamps, cruise control, dual-zone air-conditioning, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack.
Jeep also offers customization packages where you can customize your Grand Cherokee by opting for a keyless entry, a power driver seat (including lumbar adjustment), and a USB/iPod interface. Add the security and convenience package and you can get remote engine start, Bluetooth, a cargo cover, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a USB/iPod interface. Or if you prefer a back-up camera, a power passenger seat, heated front seats, leather upholstery and a nine-speaker premium sound system with digital music storage and a touch screen interface, then these too are available for customizations. The only catch in all this, these features are offered on the American model. The company is yet to release any news about the features that will be offered to its Indian customers.
There has been no official confirmation of the prices of the two models but going by speculations, it is expected to be around Rs 50 lakh for the Grand Cherokee and Rs 15 to Rs 20 lakh for the Wrangler. But prices notwithstanding, the news is sure to excite the numerous car junkies in the country who, for so long, have worshipped the Jeep from afar and won’t be content till they get their hands on one!
