IPL Auction Results – Million dollar Jadeja while Yuvraj to miss IPL

The biggest IPL bazaar, the IPL Auction, may have started off on a wrong note this year with the walk-out of the Pune Warriors franchise after their disagreement with the BCCI, but the rest of the franchisees put on a tough bargaining act to get the players of their choice.

IPL Auction 2012

For the Pune Warriors, the bone of contention seemed to be the unavailability of their star player Yuvraj Singh who will not be able to participate in this year’s IPL as he is undergoing treatment for cancer which may take 4-6 months. The Pune Warriors had asked that they be allowed to add Yuvraj’s fee to the IPL auction fund to be able to purchase an equally talented replacement for Yuvraj (rumor has it, they wanted to get their hands on Ravindra Jadeja), but sadly or glady, you decide which, they were denied their request and so they stormed out of the IPL auction.

For the eight other franchises however, Saturday’s IPL Auction was a busy day of intense bidding and buying with all rounder Ravindra Jadeja becoming the center of a tug-of-war between Chennai Super Kings and Deccan Chargers who were both offering a whopping $2 million!! Ultimately he was bought by CSK in a tie-breaker. The other costly bid was R.Vinay Kumar who was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for another $1 million.

The nine phases of the auction saw star players like Ravindra Jadeja (bought by CSK) and Mahela Jayawardene (bagged by Delhi Daredevils) being set up for auction in the first phase. Batsmen, wicket-keepers and other all rounders were put in the second, third and fourth lots which saw players like Andre Russell, Herschelle Gibbs and Dinesh Chandimal, all who found willing buyers. The fifth phase was reserved for fast bowlers where R Vinay Kumar became the prize in a furious bidding war which was ultimately won by the Royal Challengers Bangalore. The sixth lot saw the auction of spinners like West Indian Sunil Narine who was quickly picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders while the last two phases of the auction saw six players including Daniel Harris (Deccan Chargers), and Thisara Perera (Mumbai Indians) who were chosen from a list of 34 players. The final phase was reserved for a re-auction where Darren Bravo (Deccan Chargers) and Doug Bracewell (Delhi Daredevils) were among the lucky few to be bought.

In total, 25 players were sold in Saturday’s auction. Here’s the list of players bought and the teams that bought them:

Azhar Mahmood

After all the hype about Pakistani players not being included in the IPL this year, Azhar Mahmood, bought by Kings XI Punjab, was the only Pakistani player to join the league of 2012 IPL players. The point to be noted here though is that, he is no longer considered a Pakistani cricketer since he now officially holds an English citizenship and is even qualified to play for England!!

The auction also threw up a few surprises when VVS Laxman and pacer V.R.V Singh went unsold as well as almost all of England’s current cricketers who were put up for auction – James Anderson, Matt Prior, Graeme Swann, Ian Bell and Ravi Bopara. The only English cricketers to make it to this year’s IPL are: Kevin Pietersen, who was snapped up by Delhi Daredevils in the first pre-auction trading window that opened in January, Eoin Morgan who is a Kolkata Knight Rider team member and Stuart Broad, who was bought by Kings XI Punjab last year!

IPL Auction 2012

This year, the IPL board also came up with a new set of rules regarding foreign players stating – each franchise is allowed to have only 11 foreign players, of which only four are entitled to play in the match. So far, only the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils have completed their quota of 11 foreign players while the Kings XI Punjab, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Deccan Chargers still have a slot or two to fill. For the Chennai Super Kings  however, after exhausting their resources on Jadeja – $ 2 million, it will be a surprise if they have anything left for another player!! The Pune Warriors which was conspicuously absent at the auction, on the other hand still has three slots open for foreign players as per the quota.

But, a busy auction notwithstanding, only 25 out of 144 players listed for auction, were bid on and sold for a collective sum of $11 million. The remaining 119 players, who found no takers at the auction, will be open to online bids from Monday, according to a statement by IPL chief executive Sundar Rajan.

This is the list of players who will be put up for an online auction from Monday.

All said and done, the IPL 2012 auction seems to have gone off on a cautious note. With 119 players still waiting for the online auction, it remains to be seen what the final player lists for the nine teams will look like. After the Monday trading window, the IPL 2012 countdown will officially begin and you can finally tick off the days on your calendar till D-Day.
